Client Centred Communication Curriculum Overview

Module 1. Defining and identifying intentions:

Participants will explore how to identify their intentions, whether or not their intentions are congruent with their actions and, why it matters to have congruency between intention and actions.

Results: Increased awareness of congruency between actions and intentions  more authentic relationships with clients more trust between client and support person.

 

Module 2. Identifying and defining feelings and needs: 

Participants will learn various ways to identify their emotions and will understand the connection between emotions and needs.

Results: Increased self awareness  increased self compassion/understanding increased comfort when experiencing challenging emotions  increased self empowerment increased ability to be present with client’s  more effective & connecting relationships with clients

 

Module 3. Understanding the client’s feelings, needs and behaviours:

Participants will gain understanding of how emotions arise from and are directly connected to needs, and how behaviours conscious or unconscious, are an attempt to meet those needs.

Results: Increased understanding of their clients needs that underlie their behaviours  increased compassion for client  increased capacity and skill for client empathy  more supportive communication with client  clients feel safer, more trusting, supported and empowered.

 

Module 4. Discerning between needs and strategies:

Participants will learn to distinctly identify and support their client to identify the difference between their clients’ needs and behaviours/strategies.

Results: Increased understanding of client needs  increased capacity for empathy  increased capacity to support the client in identifying more life serving strategies  more effective client support towards healthy and sustainable lives  satisfied clients

 

Module 5. Understanding the difference between observations and evaluations:

Participants will learn to identify the difference between a opinion or evaluation/assessment from a fact or an observation.

Results: More responsible and accurate relaying of client information between colleagues, organisations and clients support network more effective responses to the clients needs   more satisfied clients.

 

Module 6. Noticing & Working with our judgments and reactivity :

Participants will learn specific techniques to help them notice when they are having judgments (negative & positive) of their clients and how to work with them. In additon they will also learn how to respond rather than react to challenging behaviour or communication.

Results: Increased awareness, more empathic responses to challenging behaviour or communication, increased capacity to deescalate challenging situations, safer working relationships for both clients and support workers.

 

Module 7. Setting clear and professional personal boundaries:

Participants will learn to firstly understand the dynamics of power differences between themselves and their clients and the potential consequences of those differences. They will learn to identify their own personal boundaries and comfort zones and how to maintain a comfortable working relationship.

Results: A greater sense of self understanding of their own personal boundaries  safer working relationships  greater comfort and integrity in the workplace.

 

Module 8. Client Boundaries and personal disclosure:

Participants will use the skills learned throughout the course to understand what type of communication would provide their clients with an experience of having their personal boundaries respected. What types of communication and disclosure would undermine the clients personal boundaries and comfort and how to create connecting relationships without compromising personal boundaries and client respect and consideration.

Results: A greater understanding of their clients’ personal boundaries and what would and would not support those boundaries  more respectful relationships  more comfortable and satisfied clients  a greater sense of work satisfaction  more motivation and personal pride
